Interventional Cardiology focuses on the diagnosis and treatment abnormalities in the arteries and chambers of the heart by resorting to a procedure called cardiac catheterization.

The specificity of cardiac catheterization is that, instead of resorting to “open” surgery, the interventional cardiologist inserts a long thin tube called a catheter into an artery or vein through a small incision.
Cardiac catheterization is much less invasive than open surgery, which has four main benefits:

The procedure is generally performed under local anaesthesia
The recovery time is cut down from weeks to a few days at most
The risk of complications is reduced dramatically
Scarring is minimal or even absent
